Plymouth University's dominance of the BUSA championships was continued today with it's 6th team victory in 7years. And with 3 of the 4 mens finalists being from Plymouth, it was one of their most resounding victories ever.

The contest was staged at Fistral Beach, in Newquay, from Friday to Sunday and attracted around 450 British University students from as far away as Aberdeen and Ulster. Phil Attwell, chairman of the British Universities Students Association, which organises the event, explained why they are willing to travel so far: “For many it is their only chance to take part in a competitive event. Some students only start surfing when they join their university team in October and they then spend the next six months focusing on taking part in this contest.”

Phil added: “I also want to thank the British Surfing Association for running this event for us, because they always do an amazing job.”

The conditions over the weekend varied from perfect 6-8 ft surf on the first day, to some tough onshore waves on day two. On the day of the finals the surf was 3-4 ft, a little ragged due to the wind, but totally contestable.

There was success for University College Falmouth, which entered a team for the first time this year.
Their women’s team was awarded third place and contender, Emma Vardy, was thrilled to have a place on the winner’s podium.

She said: “We worked really hard in some tough conditions and considering we are the local team it is great to walk away with a medal.”

Swansea Institute had plenty to celebrate, boasting the women's inividual winner as well as 3rd and 2nd placings in the Men's and Womens Team competitions respectively.
