GB Team Under 18s perform on day 3 of Junior World Champs PDF Print E-mail

Sunday 24th January 7.30am!!!

The GB under 18 boys had a successful day yesterday, with 3 of the 4 coming first in their repercharge heats and the 4th member coming second. The conditions were heavy again with strong onshore winds and 4-6 foot waves. The 2nd podium was closed so all the action took place on the main podium at South Piha

First in the water for the under 18s was Nathan Elms, who scored a 6 point wave in the first minute of the heat , with a solid first snap and followed by a second, both in the pocket of the wave. He followed up this with a 2 point wave ensuring he won the heat and set the scene for the rest of the day

Alex Baker soon followed suit with a 4.5 and then a 7.25 in the last 5 minutes securing the first place, beating a kiwi and Indonesian surfer, in a very convincing win

Matt Chapman was in next and beat a local Piha surfer keeping the winning streak alive.” I was so pleased to get the first wave in, it helped me relax and build my confidence” he told us

Last in for the under 18s was Beau Bromham, who came second in his heat, with some solid surfing in the testing conditions

Earlier in the day, Harry Timson was knocked out of the qualifying under 16s, and Jobe Harris was very unlucky to come third in his heat, with some solid convincing surfing gaining a 10.5 total heat score. All the under 16 boys will now surf in the repercharge heats today (Sunday) , along with the under 18 boys who are now in the second repercharge heats. The girls will also surf today, so the GB team are looking forward to a full day of surfing success.

Micah Lester team coach told us “we had an unlucky start to the day, but the team soon raised their sprits with 3 heat wins in a row. The vibe today is positive and everyone is looking forward keeping the winning spirit alive”
