MATT LE MAITRE VICTORY SEALS TITLE FOR PLYMOUTH AT UNI SURFING CHAMPS.
A radical display of new-school surfing from the Guernsey-born rider earned him a narrow victory ahead of Exeter’s James Hick in sunny but windy 3-4ft surf.  Hick was on fire throughout the three day contest, but it was Matt Le Maitre who picked up the better of the shifting peaks in the final, laying down a series of powerful snaps and slashing cutbacks to take the title.

After some electrifying surfing from fellow-finalists Christian Boletta and Jake Scott in the earlier rounds, the pair struggled to find the waves they needed to challenge for the top spot.  Having each surfed through six rounds to reach the final, in surf ranging from 3ft to 6ft, the four finalists all put in brave performances to entertain a 600-strong crowd on the beach, with the Plymouth man eventually emerging victorious.

It was a double celebration for Matt, as his points helped Plymouth A to the Men’s Team title for the third year running, ensuring a lively trip back to Devon for the team minibus.  Plymouth beat a strong Exeter men’s team into second place.

In the ladies division, Ulster University’s Shauna Ward made light work of the head-high conditions to claim the Ladies’ Open title, ripping her waves all the way to the beach.  Shauna, the reigning Irish Women’s Champion, showed her class in a hard-fought final to emerge with the title ahead of Esther Lampriere, Tracy Somerville and runner-up Jo Dennison of Swansea Institute.

Plymouth’s domination was completed with Plymouth winning a close-run Ladies Team competition ahead of rivals Marjons, with UWE third.

Despite deteriorating surf, the finals were a fitting climax to a three day feast of surfing and partying in the UK’s surfing capital.  Perfect weather and consistent head-high surf – with offshore winds until late on Saturday – gave the students plenty of reasons to be cheerful.  An estimated 1900 of them poured into town for this year’s event, providing a welcome boost to the local tourist economy.  Thanks to additional sponsorship this year from Headworx and Red Stripe, the students enjoyed a very professionally-run contest which featured an international judging panel, as well as a lively weekend of music and partying laid on by the sponsors.

“It’s been a fabulous weekend” commented contest director Karen Walton.  “With over 400 entrants of varied abilities this event can be a huge challenge, particularly if the surf is not so good.  But the contest ran like clockwork, the surfing was spectacular and the students all seem to have had a great time.”

A gallery of surfing shots and party photos, plus full event reports, are available to view at www.headworx.com.  An edited video-cast of the action will be live on the Headworx site on Tuesday.

The British Universities Sports Association (BUSA) Surfing Championships 2006 will take place on 3rd- 5th March – in partnership with BSA, supported by Headworx & Red Stripe

23/01/2006

Newquay, UK

The British Surfing Association (BSA) today announced dates for the annual BUSA Surfing Championships – supported by core surfwear brand Headworx and Red Stripe lager beer.

The event will run over three days on 3rd, 4th and 5th March at Fistral Beach in Newquay.

The BUSA Surfing Championships (or the Student Nationals, as the event is also known) is a major date on the UK’s annual surfing calendar and the competition is renowned for being the single largest surfing event in Europe with over 450 competitors.

As usual, the event will consist of individual men’s and women’s open divisions, with a concurrent team competition.  Universities battle it out in teams of four for the prestige of being BUSA’s top surfing university.  As part of the wider BUSA competition, the university teams will also accumulate points towards the BUSA Overall Championship which includes sports as diverse as Karate and Table Tennis - as well as surfing.

In the men’s division, all eyes will be on Plymouth’s Nick Tiscoe as he attempts to defend his title, but as always there will be tough competition.  Leading the pack will be last year’s runner-up, Christian Boletta, and 2004 winner James Hick from Exeter.  Former winners of the event include Nick Reid, Dan Joel and Sam Lamiroy – all of whom have gone on to pursue professional surfing careers, so the stakes are high for some of Britain’s best up-coming talent.  In the women’s division, last year’s winne,r Zoe Parsons from The College of St. Mark and St. John (Marjons), will face challenges from the likes of Plymouth’s Nina Blake and Swansea’s Beth Price.

In the team event, Plymouth (who have won the men’s title three times in the last five years) will be defending their 2005 title from usual challengers: Exeter, Bristol, and Marjons.  Meanwhile, Marjons’ women’s team will be hoping to see off Swansea and Exeter who have long traditions of success in the women’s event.  This year promises to be an exciting contest as the standard continues to improve with inland and northern universities fielding better and more experienced teams.

Headworx, the title supporter of the Surfing Championships, have organised a fun-filled social calendar in Newquay that weekend. Live music and entertainment will be on offer in town on the Friday and Saturday nights, so the 1,500 competitors and supporters will never find themselves with nothing to do!

This year the surf event has seen an improvement in levels of organisation and investment, thanks to a renewed agreement between BUSA and the BSA to run the contest.  For the first time, BUSA has allowed event partnership from a surf industry company, so Headworx and Red Stripe beer are supporting the event with financial backing, prizes and providing improved venue facilities for the competitors and spectators.

Students wishing to take part should contact their Student Union.  Full event information and entry forms are available to download from the BUSA website – www.busa.org.uk or the BSA website – www.britsurf.co.uk.  For information on the Headworx Student Weekender parties visit www.headworx.com.  The action starts at 8.30am on Friday 3rd March.
