Stokes takes British Title for the second time.

Over 100 competitors battled through the challenging 4ft conditions at this weekends British Championships at Longsands Beach, Tynemouth for a chance of a British title in 7 divisions.

The Open final was fought between local boy Sam Lamiroy, Johnny Fryer from the Isle of Wight and Newquay's Alan Stokes and Matt Capel. The results were too close to call with the crowd divided on who they thought had won. Alan Stokes was crowned the Champ, beating Lamiroy by 0.5, closely followed by youngsters Johnny Fryer and Matt Capel who both really impressed the judges this weekend with their progressive manoeuvres. Local hero Gabe Davies took the title in the Senior division also for the second time, beating 5 times British Champion Lee Bartlett, Masters winner Jamie Owen and Veterans winner Jed Stone. Jed 52 from Newquay, made it into the finals of the Senior, Masters and Veterans Division.

Record crowds once again showed on Tynemouth longsands beach to watch the British surfing elite battle it out for the national titles. Over 5 thousand people appeared on the beach to offer their support. Organisers were astounded with the crowds almost doubling the record numbers of people who spectated last year.

Paul Wilkinson, Marketing Director O’Neill UK said "We couldn’t have imagined the numbers of people who have turned up here this weekend, the North East public have been fantastic. This is the most successful event we have held in the UK. We now intend to hold the event here again next year."
